Changing a passenger on a group ticket: what is allowed

Swapping one traveller for another, fixing a misspelt name, and why the answer depends on whether tickets are issued yet.

By the AirRJ Group Desk · Updated 4 Nov 2026

Someone drops out a week before the trip and a colleague wants their seat. Can you just change the name? It depends almost entirely on one thing: whether the tickets have been issued.

Before ticketing

Until the name list deadline, names are flexible on most group bookings. You can replace people freely. This is why we advise sending the name list only when you are reasonably sure.

After ticketing

A ticket is tied to a person. Many airlines do not allow a full name change after issue; the original ticket is cancelled under the fare rules and a new ticket is bought for the replacement passenger, sometimes at the current fare. A few airlines allow a paid name change on group fares — we check this for your specific booking.

Spelling corrections

Small corrections — a missing letter, a wrong middle initial, first and last names swapped — are usually possible, sometimes with a fee. For international flights, the name must match the passport exactly, so fix errors as soon as you spot them.

What to send us

The booking reference, the passenger's current name, the correct or new name, and a photo of the ID page. We confirm the cost before anything is changed.

Quick answers

Is a name change free on group tickets?

Before ticketing, usually yes. After ticketing it is usually charged, or not permitted, depending on the airline.

My surname is missing on the ticket. Will I be allowed to fly?

Do not wait to find out. Send us the details and we will request a correction with the airline before travel.

Airline group rules differ by carrier, route and season, and they change. Treat this guide as a planning aid — the fare rules written on your AirRJ quote are what apply to your booking.

Travelling with 10 or more people?

Send us the route, rough dates and head-count. A Group Desk executive will come back with airline options, the fare validity and the date by which names are needed — usually the same working day.
