Babies and children on group flights: fares, IDs and seating

Age bands, lap infants, ID and the seats babies are not allowed in.

By the AirRJ Group Desk · Updated 4 Nov 2026

Family and wedding groups nearly always include small children. Airlines have specific rules for them — it helps to know them before the name list.

Age bands

CategoryTypical ageSeat
InfantUnder 2 yearsOn an adult's lap
Child2 to 11 yearsOwn seat
Adult12 years and aboveOwn seat

Age is counted on the date of travel, including the return flight. A child who turns two before the return flight needs a seat on that leg.

One infant per adult

Each adult can usually carry only one lap infant. Families with twins need a second adult.

Seats

Infants cannot sit in emergency exit rows. Bassinets are available on some long-haul aircraft and must be requested in advance.

ID

For domestic flights, carry the child's birth certificate or Aadhaar. For international flights, every child and infant needs their own passport.

Quick answers

Do infants pay on group bookings?

Yes, a reduced infant fare plus applicable taxes, even though they sit on a lap.

Airline group rules differ by carrier, route and season, and they change. Treat this guide as a planning aid — the fare rules written on your AirRJ quote are what apply to your booking.

Travelling with 10 or more people?

Send us the route, rough dates and head-count. A Group Desk executive will come back with airline options, the fare validity and the date by which names are needed — usually the same working day.
