Elderly passengers and wheelchair assistance in a group

Ask in advance, give details per passenger, and plan airport time around the slowest member of the group.

By the AirRJ Group Desk · Updated 4 Nov 2026

Pilgrimage groups, wedding families and senior citizen tours often include travellers who need help at the airport. Airlines provide it free of charge in most cases — but they need notice.

Request it in advance

Tell us which passengers need a wheelchair when you send the name list. We add it to each passenger's booking. Last-minute requests at the airport can mean a long wait.

Types of assistance

  • Wheelchair to and from the aircraft door.
  • Help up and down aircraft steps (where there is no aerobridge).
  • Help for passengers who are hard of hearing or have low vision.

On the day

Reach the airport early and ask at the airline counter. Keep medicines, prescriptions and a copy of ID in the cabin bag. Seat each elderly traveller next to a family member or carer.

Quick answers

Is wheelchair assistance free?

Airlines in India generally provide wheelchair assistance free of charge when requested in advance.

Airline group rules differ by carrier, route and season, and they change. Treat this guide as a planning aid — the fare rules written on your AirRJ quote are what apply to your booking.

Travelling with 10 or more people?

Send us the route, rough dates and head-count. A Group Desk executive will come back with airline options, the fare validity and the date by which names are needed — usually the same working day.
