Char Dham Yatra by air: flying a pilgrim group to Dehradun

Fly into Dehradun, register for the yatra, book helicopters early — and plan the pace for the oldest person in the group.

By the AirRJ Group Desk · Updated 4 Nov 2026

Most Char Dham groups fly into Jolly Grant Airport (DED), Dehradun, then travel by road to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. Flights take a full day off the journey, which matters a lot for elderly pilgrims.

Registration

The Uttarakhand government requires pilgrims to register for the Char Dham Yatra. Do this for every member of the group before travel; you will be asked for it on the route.

Helicopters to Kedarnath

Helicopter seats to Kedarnath from the Guptkashi–Phata–Sersi area are booked through the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal and sell out quickly when bookings open. These are separate from your flight booking.

Season

The temples generally open around April–May and close around October–November, with dates announced each year. The monsoon months bring landslide risk on the roads.

Elderly yatris

  • Add wheelchair assistance at both airports.
  • Keep medication in cabin baggage.
  • Build rest days into the road schedule.

Quick answers

Which airport is closest for Char Dham?

Can AirRJ book the Kedarnath helicopter?

Helicopter tickets are booked on the official IRCTC Heli Yatra portal. We arrange the flights to and from Dehradun.

Airline group rules differ by carrier, route and season, and they change. Treat this guide as a planning aid — the fare rules written on your AirRJ quote are what apply to your booking.

Travelling with 10 or more people?

Send us the route, rough dates and head-count. A Group Desk executive will come back with airline options, the fare validity and the date by which names are needed — usually the same working day.
